![]() It’s an allegory of Black liberation in the post-Reconstruction South, advocating for education as a way out of systemic oppression, and an important contribution from a composer whose career shaped the course of music in America. Maybe youve heard his famous piece, a ragtime gem released in 1899: The Maple Leaf Rag. Among Joplin’s best-known tunes were The Easy Winners (1901), Elite Syncopations (1902), the ragtime waltz Bethena (1905), and Pineapple Rag (1908), which in its second half shows that its composer was fully aware of the expressive power of the ‘blue’ notes which would soon come to dominate jazz. Joplin’s opera Treemonisha was premiered in 1972, long after his death in 1917. He was partially responsible for popularizing a new era of music. The Entertainer is one of the most well-known ragtime pieces in history. Joplin, who died in 1916, would have been delighted by all the attention. "Original Rags" was his first to appear in print, in 1898 it was soon followed by the two most famous rags of all time, "Maple Leaf Rag" (1899), which sold about half a million copies by 1909, and "The Entertainer" (1902), which was used as the theme for the 1973 film The Sting.
